Land and People: Zizek year: "'What one should add here, moving beyond Kant, is that there is a privileged social group which, on account of its lacking a determinate place in the 'private' order of social hierarchy, directly stands for universality: it is only the reference to those Excluded, to those who dwell in the blanks of the State space, that enables true universality. There is nothing more 'private' than a State community which perceives the Excluded as a threat and worries how to keep the Excluded at a proper distance."

AGI News On - GAZA: AID SHIP RAMMED BY ISRAELIS REACHES LEBANON

(AGI) - Tiro (Lebanon), 30 Dec. - The humanitarian aid ship 'Dignity' has managed to reach land at Tiro, a city in southern Lebanon. The ship had been intercepted and rammed several hours before by an Israeli patrol boat as it tried to get to the Gaza Strip to deliver a further 3.5 tons of basic goods, which were mostly medicines intended for the population of the Palestinian enclave which has undergone continuous bombing raids from Israel. The ship, which is about 20 metres long, flying the British flag and belonging to the pacifist 'Free Gaza' movement which is based in the United States, was escorted to port by a unit of the Lebanese Navy and several fishing boats, which were flying Lebanese or local Shiite party flags, including that of Hezbollah. The boat was greeted at port by an enormous crowd, including both Lebanese and Palestinian onlookers, who greeted the ship's arrival with a cheer. All 16 members of the crew, from various countries, were unhurt but the 'Dignity' is not now able to sail: in fact a large tear was visible in the keel as a result of the collision, and according to sources from the humanitarian group, quite a lot of water came onboard after the patrol boat's attack, which also included several volleys of bullets from automatic weapons. This last detail, has however been denied by the spokesman of the Israeli foreign ministry, Yigal Palmor, who admitted that there had been ''physical contact'' between the Coast Guard's boat and the ship, which set out yesterday evening from Cyprus. The Cypriot State radio has reported that the country's government intends to ask for explanations from Israel for what happened, partly because there were also three Cypriots on board, including Eleni Theocharous, an MP

Blood Sugar Linked To Normal Cognitive Aging: "Maintaining blood sugar levels, even in the absence of disease, may be an important strategy for preserving cognitive health, suggests a study published by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC)."

Senior moments, also dubbed by New York Times Op-Ed columnist David Brooks as being "hippocampically challenged," are a normal part of aging. Such lapses in memory, according to this new research, could be blamed, at least in part, on rising blood glucose levels as we age. The findings suggest that exercising to improve blood sugar levels could be a way for some people to stave off the normal cognitive decline that comes with age.

Religion may have evolved because of its ability to help people exercise self-control (physorg.com)

Religion may have evolved because of its ability to help people exercise self-control: "self-control is critical for success in life, and a new study by University of Miami professor of Psychology Michael McCullough finds that religious people have more self-control than do their less religious counterparts. These findings imply that religious people may be better at pursuing and achieving long-term goals that are important to them and their religious groups. This, in turn, might help explain why religious people tend to have lower rates of substance abuse, better school achievement, less delinquency, better health behaviors, less depression, and longer lives."

NCES - Distance Education at Degree-Granting Postsecondary Institutions: 2006-07

Distance Education at Degree-Granting Postsecondary Institutions: 2006-07

The 2006-07 study on distance education collected information on the prevalence, types, delivery, policies, and acquisition or development of distance education courses and programs. Findings indicate that during the 2006-07 academic year, two-thirds (66 percent) of 2-year and 4-year Title IV degree-granting postsecondary institutions reported offering online, hybrid/blended online, or other distance education courses for any level or audience. Sixty-five percent of the institutions reported college-level credit-granting distance education courses, and 23 percent of the institutions reported noncredit distance education courses. Sixty-one percent of 2-year and 4-year institutions reported offering online courses, 35 percent reported hybrid/blended courses, and 26 percent reported other types of college-level credit-granting distance education courses. Together, distance education courses accounted for an estimated 12.2 million enrollments (or registrations). Asynchronous (not simultaneous or real-time) Internet-based technologies were cited as the most widely used technology for the instructional delivery of distance education courses; they were used to a large extent in 75 percent and to a moderate extent in 17 percent of the institutions that offered college-level credit-granting distance education courses. The most common factors cited as affecting distance education decisions to a major extent were meeting student demand for flexible schedules, providing access to college for students who would otherwise not have access, making more courses available, and seeking to increase student enrollment.

'The injured were lying there asking God to let them die' | World news | The Guardian: "Being a health worker, I had to check the needs of Shifa hospital and the other hospitals in Gaza. The situation in Shifa is really bad. There were corpses in corridors covered with blankets. The mortuary couldn't cope with the number of bodies. Two bodies were left on stretchers, one wrapped in a blanket. They leave them until families can recognise them.

There were mothers, fathers looking for children, looking for relatives. Everyone was confused and seeking support. Mothers were crying, people were asking about relatives, the medical team was confused.

Some people were just lying there, some were screaming, some were very, very angry. There were a lot of injured arriving, ambulances coming in and out. The injured were coming by private cars and they were being left wherever. You could see blood here and there."

"Herman Rosenblat and his wife are the most gentle, loving, beautiful people," literary agent Andrea Hurst said Sunday, anguishing over why she, and so many others, were taken by Rosenblat's story of love born on opposite sides of a barbed-wire fence at a concentration camp.

"I question why I never questioned it. I believed it; it was an incredible, hope-filled story."

On Saturday, Berkley Books canceled Rosenblat's memoir, "Angel at the Fence," after he acknowledged that he and his wife did not meet, as they had said for years, at a sub-camp of Buchenwald, where she allegedly sneaked

World Vision » North Gaza children bear brunt of humanitarian crisis reveals report

Report published a week before the massacre reveals a major humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Image what is happening now during Israeli's massacre and Egyptian blockade on the borders:

World Vision » North Gaza children bear brunt of humanitarian crisis reveals report: "JERUSALEM-WESTBANK-GAZA - A baseline survey conducted in World Vision’s North Gaza Area Development Programme (ADP) has revealed disturbing findings linked to the physical and psychosocial well being of children – underscoring the need for long-term, sustainable development among some 66,000 people"

More than 33.1% of families in Beit Lahya have 10 or more family members and live in extreme poverty. They rely on coupons for food and can’t afford to adequately clothe and educate their children.

While nearly every household in Beit Lahya has access to water, the quality is so poor that 95% of households have to buy their drinking water. Many children are affected by parasites and diarrhoea, which is adequately treated in only 24% of cases.

Mild stunting (low height for age) affects almost 13% of children, moderate stunting 8.46%, and severe stunting 4.83%. “My children have forgotten the shape and smell of cooked meat and chicken", said a mother in one focus group.

Perhaps even more alarming is the poor psychosocial well-being of children, with bedwetting and nightmares featuring heavily in focus group findings – both linked with fear and anxiety as a result of the ongoing conflict. "Most children with nightmares experience lack of concentration and attention deficit", shared a teacher in a focus group session.

Food and Medical Supplies Grow Scarce on the Besieged Gaza Strip - washingtonpost.com: "Humanitarian aid groups sounded the alarm Sunday about what they described as a deteriorating medical situation in the Strip and urged the opening of Gaza's borders to allow supplies to flow to hospitals. There are growing shortages of vital medicines and equipment, the aid workers said.

'There are hundreds of wounded in the hospitals in the Gaza Strip, and what we have received so far has only been a fraction of our need. Our supplies have been depleted, and we are in desperate need for supplies,' said Iyad Nasr, a spokesman for the International Committee for the Red Cross in Gaza. 'We ask the parties to avoid striking the civilian population on both sides.'

AP Mobile News story - Child maid trafficking spreads from Africa to US

http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_8561/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=oKw2TNte

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Late at night, the neighbors saw a little girl at the kitchen sink of the house next door. They watched through their window as the child rinsed plates under the open faucet. She wasn't much taller than the counter and the soapy water swallowed her slender arms.

To put the dishes away, she climbed on a chair.

But she was not the daughter of the couple next door doing chores. She was their maid.

Shyima was 10 when a wealthy Egyptian couple brought her from a poor village in northern Egypt to work in their California home. She awoke before dawn and often worked past midnight to iron their clothes, mop the marble floors and dust the family's crystal. She earned $45 a month working up to 20 hours a day. She had no breaks during the day and no days off.

Israel

As I woke up I was very disgusted with what I saw on TV. I have 2 kids. I will not want to imagine loosing them. I think this was genocide. The killing of civilians should not be tolerated. America should stop supporting Israel people. I hope President Barack Obama will see through that. Make the world safe again please!

This is GENOCIDE

this is a war of history, the Israelis should realize that they are occupying the Palestinian lands. As any home citizen will do, they defend their country, and try to take back whats theirs. As for Israel, they attack Gaza for what? defense? its not even your country in the first place, killing hundreds of women and children, destroying mosques and hospitals, you call that fighting terrorism? Hey think a bit, Palestinians are the one protecting, and you call them Terrorist? what has man become?

The ugly face of Israel & USA

The attack has uncovered the ugly face of Israel and its lone supporter the USA. The Bush administration, which not only has failed to condemn Israel for the attack but also done just opposite, did not take lessons from the shoe throwing in Baghdad. How funny is that the USA condemned Palestanians (or Hamas) when the terrorist state of Israel killed over 250 Palestanians.

One-sided..?...

Gazans are simply trying to defend their land, as are all Palestinians... Look at the population maps of Palestinians in Israel. They are being pushed into small towns (like nazi Ghettos/Death Camps) with all supplies cut off. If you had your electricity/food/water/gasoline taken away, wouldn't you try to defend yourself?? Gazans launched one or two missiles into Israeli occupied cities with NO israeli fatalities and now 280+ people are dead, mostly innocent probably, with more deaths promised

We did all in our power to overlook the missiles that were shot from Gaza directly into Israelis towns and cities. our civilans were injured and killed but despite our requests - Hammas kept on firing and the world did nothing. humanitarian issues

Calling Israel actions "Massacre" and saying there is an humanitarian crises is just calling "wolf, wolf". 3 years ago Israel left Gaza strip, all troops are out and all settlement were evacuated - in a very high political price. Gaza has Autonomy and instead of prospering (it is an Israel interest as well) they continue to arm theme self, and continued to fire rockets with extended ranges each time. How can you even defend whats going in? They have reported about what happening in the occupied parts of Palestine, 1 person died. Where is the conscience of of the world? The world will one day regret giving Israel a chance to own nuclear power as Israel will not stop till it enslave the whole world. I spoke to one man, a civilian, and also a 14-year-old boy who were injured in an airstrike on a police station in the east of Gaza City this morning.

The man said he had been going to work in a clinic when he heard the sound of planes and turned back. But after that he cannot remember what happened - he just woke up injured, with wounds in his hand, leg and stomach.

The teenage boy had blood on his head and was in a lot of pain. He could not even remember his own name. "I don't even know where I am," he said to me.

I saw a body too, in the emergency room, with a stick of wood stuck through the chest.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Eyewitness: Chaos in Gaza

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Eyewitness: Chaos in Gaza: "The BBC's reporter in the Gaza Strip, Rushdi Aboualouf, described the chaos as Israeli warplanes fired missiles at Hamas targets, killing at least 155 Palestinians."

Israeli planes are still flying over Gaza and they have just targeted another Hamas [security] compound in the middle of the Gaza Strip, in a place called Khan Younis.

We can see from our office here in Gaza, in the middle of Gaza City, ambulances are still evacuating the injured from buildings and school kids are trying to find secure places.

People who were going to their work were turned back and went home, and most of the residents in Gaza have been ordered by the Ministry of Health to stay indoors.

The mosques in Gaza are calling the people here to go to the hospitals and to donate blood. There is no room in the hospitals as far as we've heard from Hamas sources to treat the people.

No safe places

It's a very bad situation... There were Israeli aeroplanes everywhere, hitting everywhere. You could see smoke from north to south, from west to east. The people are really in a panic. The main object for the people now is to find a secure place to secure their family.

It's hard to find a secure place in Gaza. Gaza has no shelters, it has no safe places. The Hamas security compounds are in the middle of the city - it's not the kind of place where you see compounds outside the cities.

I have witnessed one of the compounds - which is 20m away from my house - I was standing on the balcony and I have seen the Israeli airplanes hitting the place.

Some of my balcony was damaged and my kid was injured and it's a very, very serious situation here in Gaza, the people can't do anything except stay indoors.

Joan Ganz Cooney is co-creater of Sesame Street and the Children's Television Workshop. When Sesame Street made its TV debut in 1969, it was thanks to Cooney. Americans prefer news from Web to newspapers: survey

Americans prefer news from Web to newspapers: survey: "Television, however, remains the preferred medium for Americans, according to the survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Center for the People & the Press."

Seventy percent of the 1,489 people surveyed by Pew said television is their primary source for national and international news.

Forty percent said they get most of their news from the Internet, up from 24 percent in September 2007, and more than the 35 percent who cited newspapers as their main news source.

Only 59 percent of people younger than 30 years old prefer television, Pew said, down from 68 percent in the September 2007 survey.

The latest survey was conducted December 3-7 and released on Tuesday. Pew did not provide the margin of error."

nsf.gov - SRS 2007 Records Fifth Consecutive Annual Increase in U.S. Doctoral Awards - US National Science Foundation (NSF)

nsf.gov - SRS 2007 Records Fifth Consecutive Annual Increase in U.S. Doctoral Awards - US National Science Foundation (NSF): "U.S. institutions awarded 48,079 doctorates in 2007, the highest number ever reported by the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) and an increase of 5.4% over 2006. This is the fifth consecutive annual increase in U.S. doctoral awards"

Jaquelina C. Falkenheim and Mark K. Fiegener writes:

Numbers of doctorates awarded in 2007 rose in both the science and engineering (S&E) and non-S&E field-of-study categories. S&E doctorates totaled 31,801 (66.1% of all doctorates) in 2007, an increase of 6.5% over 2006 and 16.6% since 1998. All science fields except chemistry and psychology reached record numbers of awards in 2007, with the highest number being awarded in the biological sciences (7,173, or 14.9% of all doctorates). In chemistry, awards decreased by 1.5% in 2007 but have increased overall by 5.1% since 1998. The number of psychology awards increased 1.1% over 2006 but have declined 10.3% since 1998, from 3,673 to 3,294. Awards in engineering increased 7.8% in 2007 and rose 30.8% over the last decade, from 5,921 in 1998 to 7,745 in 2007. Every engineering field but mechanical engineering reported record numbers of awards in 2007. Electrical engineering was the fastest growing engineering field during the decade 1998–2007, with the number of doctorates awarded in that field increasing 51.0%.

The number of awards in non-S&E fields reached 16,278 in 2007 and grew at a slower pace than did those in S&E fields: 3.4% in the last year and 6.0% since 1998. Within non-S&E fields, awards in education reversed their downward trend, growing from 6,120 in 2006 to 6,429 in 2007, but were 3.2% below their 2003 peak (6,643). Doctoral awards in the humanities declined by 4.6% in the last year and have declined by 4.4% since 1998. Awards in health (2,134 in 2007) showed substantial growth: a 12.0% increase in 2007 and a 42.4% increase over the last decade. Similarly, doctorates in professional fields (2,825 in 2007) increased 8.9% over 2006 and have increased 29.8% since 1998.

Student: Deficit? National Debt? What does that mean?

award-winning videos that questions some students' knowledge of US economy. Not expecting students to know the exact digits but replies like "national?" or "deficit? what does that mean?" are not very encouraging for future generations.

from FacingUp.org:

"The United States has amassed nearly $10 trillion in federal debt and about $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities — all at a time when our nation faces a deepening financial and economic crisis. With health-care costs rapidly rising and 78 million baby boomers about to retire, straining our Social Security and Medicare systems, our country faces severe long-term fiscal challenges, which could lead to steep tax hikes, major cutbacks in federal spending, higher interest rates, inflation and a declining economy — not to mention an unsustainable path for our children and grandchildren. International Economic Update, December 2008 - Globalization & Monetary Policy Institute - FRB Dallas

International Economic Update, December 2008 - Globalization & Monetary Policy Institute - FRB Dallas: "The financial crisis that began in the North Atlantic region has morphed into a global slowdown. Financial markets remain tense despite efforts to increase liquidity. Growth around the world is expected to remain negative into 2009 (Chart 1). The lower demand is causing a decline in inflation, as well as in trade. A rebound to the global economy is expected by the end of 2009."

Housing Impact on Society

In a 2007 research paper by Partnership for America’s Economic Success and the Ecomomic Policy Institute titled "The Hidden Costs of the Housing Crisis: The Long-Term Impact of
Housing Affordability and Quality on Young Children’s Odds of Success", Roy, Maynard and Weiss found that "twice as many Americans (95 million) spend more than
30 percent of their income on housing than lack health insurance (45.7 million); 11 percent of the U.S. homeless population is age 6 or younger; and three or more early life residential moves
can reduce a child’s odds of graduating high school by nearly 20 percent compared to their nonmoving peers." Full paper here

Tadamon! » Lebanon: Interview on Migrant Workers

(thanks to Farfahinne for this blog post)

Tadamon! » Lebanon: Interview on Migrant Workers: "In Lebanon, between 150,000 to 300,000 women work as migrant domestic workers, with approximately 100,000 having legal status in the country. In August 2008, Human Rights Watch released a report covering the period of January 1, 2007 to August 15, 2008 revealing migrant domestic workers had extremely high death tolls due to unnatural causes."

Migrant domestic workers experience harsh working conditions and consistent workplace abuse, and currently many migrant domestic workers can be found sleeping under cars or on the ground surrounding their respective countries’ embassies in Lebanon, searching for assistance for their situations. Nadim Houry is the senior researcher at Human Rights Watch covering Lebanon and Lillian Boctor from Tadamon spoke with Houry about the situation."

The European brain drain | VOX

The European brain drain | vox - Research-based policy analysis and commentary from leading economists: "This column surveys evidence describing the brain drain from Europe to the US. Europeans living in the US are exceptional – they are more educated, earn higher wages, are more likely to be employed, and more entrepreneurial than their American or European counterparts. Europe's growth prospects may be dramatically reduced by its best and brightesting living in the US."

Giles Saint-Paul writes

Since 1995, America has grown faster while enjoying lower unemployment than Europe. Adding to Europe's growth angst are worries about aging populations, its inability to adapt to technical change, the burden of its welfare state, and the pains of labour market deregulation. A particular worry is that Europe is losing its most talented workers to the US. Stories of succesfull expatriates in Silicon Valley and top academic departments abound. European politicians and businesses complain that they cannot compete with the US due to taxes and regulations (François-Poncet 1999, Mahroum 1999).

Is this brain drain for real? While Becker et al. (2002) look at data on the brain drain from Italy to the rest of Europe, this column draws on my research using US census data for 1990 and 2000 to measure the characteristics of European expatriates and see how they fare in the US labour market (Saint-Paul 2004, 2008).

Informed Comment: Lebanese are Phoenicians After All; And so Are Many of the Rest of US

Juan Cole writes on his blogs, Informed Comment: Lebanese are Phoenicians After All; And so Are Many of the Rest of US: "Lebanese are Phoenicians After All; And so Are Many of the Rest of US":
A team of biologists at Lebanese American University estimates that 1 in 17 persons around the Mediterranean carries genetic markers distinctive to the ancient Phoenician people who resided in what is now Lebanon. The Phoenicians spread out in a trade diaspora two millennia ago, establishing colonies from Spain to Cyprus. The team also found that one third of Lebanese have the markers for Phoenician descent, and that these are spread evenly through the population, among both Christians and Muslims. In fact, all Lebanese have broadly similar sets of genetic markers. The lead researcher commented, 'Whether you take a Christian village in the north of Lebanon or a Muslim village in the south, the DNA make-up of its residents is likely to be identical . . .'"

We have performed extensive software development, trade back testing, and portfolio simulation. the article in physorg.com notes:

The Jeita Grotto, in a river valley near the capital Beirut, is currently ranked 24th out of 77 on the list of nominations compiled by contest organisers "New 7 Wonders of Nature".

Other sites in the Middle East include Wadi Rum in Jordan, Israel's Ein Gedi oasis and the Mesopotamian Marshes in Iraq.

"The Jeita cave is considered one of the largest and most beautiful caves in the world, with an impressive diversity of rock shapes and colours," said Nabil Haddad, a German-trained engineer who is the cave's general manager.

Dear Santa

Dallas post office receives around 5000 Santa letters each year, Dallas Morning News reports.

Dear Santa Clause,

I would like for you to give my family a present. Like for my mom is a camera case ... my dad wants a kayak. ... And I would like to give my dad a new job. My dog would also like a pooper-scooper.

From Maya

Hi Santa.

Santa, whatever my kids can get for xmas they will be happy because I am not able this year to buy anything.

Wanda

Dear Santa,

I also have one Christmas wish. I wish my mother gets better and doesn't do drugs anymore. I love her and don't want her to die.

Love you very much, Elijah

Dear Santa,

We kind of need your help this year because mom and dad are having trouble buying us anything this year. Thanks.

From the Barrons

Dear Santa,

The reason I am writing this letter in September is because I don't want any Christmas presents this Christmas because I feel like I don't deserve any. So please don't give me any please.

Write back soon, Rachel

But you may give me one present.

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is a black lab or yellow lab. I don't want anything else except the puppy. Pleas, pleas, pleas, pleas, pleas get me the puppy. Make sure it has had it shots and doesn't bark a lot. And that it is trained not to go to the restroom in the house. A puppy is all I want.

Love, Katherine

Dear Santa Clause,

I would like a hair straightener and a hair curler. Why? Simply because I want to look GOOD. Well I already look good. I guess you could say I want to look HOTTER.

Sincerely, Kelly

Then, underneath scribbling on the lower half of the page:

Christopher wrote this. He is being a bad boy and I don't think he deserves a gift.

Dear Santa Claus,

For my mom: She wants to start her resume business online so please give her the strength and knowledge to succeed. This way she'll be home more.

Love, Antonio

Santa,

If you run out of both (of the toys I requested), then use Christmas magic and make Dinosaur King real.

Your very best friend, Steven

Dear Santa,

Please don't give me much for Christmas. There is a boy or girl who needs more love and deserves more than me. Thank you Santa Claus.

Love, Hope

Hi Santa.

Do you play golf? If you do, do you like it? ... I still have not thought about wot I wont. Later that will be on another note.

Love, Caroline

Dear Santa Clause,

The one thing I want for Christmas is for everyone to celebrate Jesus birthday and for all the poor sick people to get better. I have been very good this year and can't wait to take a picture with you at the mall.

I love you Santa.

Love, Karsen

Dear Santa,

Emily and I want an elf. Any elf. Just make sure it speaks English.

Love, Emily and Mary

To whom it may concern: Santa Clause, Father Christmas, St. Nicholas, ect, ect.

My wish, nay my command, is a cellphone and a go cart. (Possibly a Wii and a dirt bike too.)

Unsigned

Dear Santa,

You are a good ole man. Can my presents be wrapped? ... I would like a pet large mouth bass.

Love your good ole boy, Terry

Dear Santa Claus,

I've been doing good but I don't know what I should do about us moving to California. What should I do? Because I want mom and dad to be happy, but I want to be happy too.

Kaitlynn

Dear Santa,

NO CLOTHES.

Victoria

The Current Detainee Population of Guantánamo: An Empirical Study - Brookings Institution: "The following report represents an effort both to document and to describe in as much detail as the public record will permit the current detainee population in American military custody at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba. Since the military brought the first detainees to Guantánamo in January 2002, the Pentagon has consistently refused to comprehensively identify those it holds. While it has, at various times, released information about individuals who have been detained at Guantánamo, it has always maintained ambiguity about the population of the facility at any given moment, declining even to specify precisely the number of detainees held at the base. In its most recent statements, for example, the military refers to the Guantánamo population as numbering “approximately 250.”[i] When the government repatriates detainees, it generally identifies the number of detainees transferred, but not their names.[ii]"

new social world driven by cybernetics and technologically-advanced social sciences

An introduction to a conference on sociocybernetics to be held in Italy 2009 (9TH International Conference of Sociocybernetics 'Modernity 2.0': Emerging Social Media Technologies and their Impacts - Urbino, Italy 29 June - 5 July 2009) introduces an interdisciplinary study or academic concept called Web Science and new visions towards the social sciences and technology

In recent years, the Internet and other information and communication technologies have had great impacts on almost all aspects of human life, locally and globally. The extant of these impacts can be seen in the ubiquity of the use of the prefix 'e-', as in e-commerce, e-business, e-government, e-democracy, e-science, e-learning, e-entertainment and so on. Thanks to the cheaper prices and ease of use of these technologies, more and more people are able to access digital contents, as part of a mass audience, and more and more people are able to create and publish content off their own initiative. The Web has moved from being a one-way communication channel extending traditional media, to a complex "peer-to-peer" communication space with a blurred author/audience distinction and new ways to create, share and use knowledge in a social way. This establishes new global fora, started by a few, and sustained by millions of local acts. This change of paradigm is currently profoundly transforming most areas of our lives: our interactions with other people, our relationships, ways of gathering, creating and disseminating information, ways of developing social norms, opinions, attitudes and even legal aspects as well as ways of working and doing business. It also raises a strong need for theoretical, empirical and applied studies related to how people may interact on the Web, how they actually do so and what new possibilities and challenges are emerging in the individual, business and technology dimensions. It is not the first time in the history of social media that a new technology becomes suddenly available to a wider group of people due to a specific social, economical and historical context.

The last time something similar happened, the availability and diffusion of the printing press, according to many authors, the opportunities for the rise of modern society emerged. We are probably facing a similar new extraordinary change that we can barely describe today. According to the law of accelerated return identified by Ray Kurzweil, this change is taking place at a much faster speed than before. This is a major challenge for social science in a world where 'internet time' now runs at a clock speed several orders of magnitude faster than that of academic research.

In order to explore these possibilities and tackle the challenges, a more interdisciplinary scientific approach is required. The visionary founding fathers of cybernetics and systems theory urged for this new vision of the sciences as soon as they started working on teleological machines interacting with human beings during the Second World War. Not surprisingly, today, Sir Tim Berners Lee (the inventor of the World Wide Web) is developing a vision for new field of interdisciplinary study called Web Science. The goal of this conference is therefore to bring researchers and practitioners together to explore within a sociocybernetic approach the issues and challenges related to social aspects of the new communication technologies and especially the Web.

The more you take the more you lose (Physorg.com)

from a University of Chicago research reported on physorg.com: The more you take the more you lose:

"In everyday social exchanges, being mean to people has a lot more impact than being nice, research at the University of Chicago has shown.
Feeling slighted can have a bigger difference on how a person responds than being the recipient of perceived generosity, even if the net value of the social transaction is the same, the research on reciprocity—giving and taking—shows.

'Negative reciprocity, or taking, escalates,' said Boaz Keysar, Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago and lead author of the paper 'Reciprocity is Not Give and Take: Asymmetric Reciprocity to Positive and Negative Acts,' published in the December issue of Psychological Science. The study was based on giving-and-taking games conducted on students and people in downtown Chicago."

{....}

The study shows various social exchanges differ from those in the marketplace, where goods are bought and sold, Keysar said. "Acts of giving are perceived as more generous in social exchanges than objectively identical acts of taking," Keysar said. "Taking tends to escalate. Reciprocity appears to operate on an exchange rate that assigns value to the meaning of events, in a fashion that encourages pro-social exchanges."

Middle East tutorial « More Light Than Heat

From More Light Than Heart blogger on the Middle East
"Rather than try to intersperse this topic amongst the other blog posts, I think it will be most useful to record my thoughts in one place. A basic understanding of the history and culture of the Middle East is imperative to us in the West as we face the challenges presented by a resurgent and distinctly fundamentalist Islam. It is important to understand the formation of this new movement and its variants, as well as its roots in history, religion, and culture."

Mathematics Achievement of Language-Minority Students During the Elementary Years

National Center for Education Statistics in the US released the follow report: Mathematics Achievement of Language-Minority Students During the Elementary Years: "This Issue Brief uses data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) to examine the scores of public-school language-minority students on a mathematics assessment in 1st grade, as well as the gain in their scores between 1st and 5th grades. Scores are reported by three background characteristics--student’s race/ethnicity, poverty status, and mother’s education--that have been found to be related to achievement. The findings indicate that language-minority students (English Proficient students and English Language Learners) scored lower on a 1st-grade mathematics assessment than did students whose primary home language was English. Between 1st and 5th grades, there was no measurable difference in gain scores on the mathematics assessment among the three language groups. However, gain score differences within and between the language groups were found by student background characteristics. For example, Asian language-minority students made greater gains than their Hispanic peers."

Shoes for Bush « More Light Than Heat

Shoes for Bush « More Light Than Heat:
"It would seem that at least one Iraqi journalist has had enough. He took off his shoes and threw them at President Bush at a news conference held during a surprise “victory tour” visit to Iraq. It seems that the journalist had lost members of his family to the war, had been kidnapped at one point, had spend considerable time reporting on the violence in Sadr City. Journalists who know the individual say that he just snapped. Were he an American serviceman, he might well have been diagnosed with PTSD. But the act of throwing shoes at the American President and, as the Secret Service wrestled him to the ground and hustled him away, calling out, “You dog!” needs to be viewed through the lens of Middle Eastern values and cultural mores.

Remember the images of Iraqis beating the downed statue of Saddam Hussein with their shoes? Well, in Arab culture showing the soles of your feet to another is is considered extremely bad form. Watch carefully, and you’ll not see Arab leaders sitting with their legs crossed in such a way as to expose the soles of their shoes to others. We read body language as positive if western leaders are pictured with their legs crossed toward each other. Not so in the cultures of the Middle East. Even in photos of Bedouins sitting in their traditional tents, it’s extremely rare to see the soles of their feet or sandals. So, for an Iraqi journalist to throw shoes at the current American President is an insult of the highest order. Furthermore, dogs are viewed as unclean animals, not as members of the family, so to call another a dog is also highly insulting." read more

AUB Students for Gaza

from Farfahinne blog:

14 clubs and a big group of AUB students took the initiative to launch a campaign to bring attention to what has been going on in Gaza strip because of the siege upon it. The Gaza strip, south of Palestine, has been under the most brutal Israeli siege for months now. Electricity has been cut out for weeks, food and medicine have not been allowed in Gaza for a long time, and finally hospitals, schools and even bakeries are closing down because Israel has blocked fuel and basic life necessities from entering Gaza. The campaign will host a week of events from Monday, December 15th, to Friday, December 19th. Please spread the word and join us to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza against the inhumane siege.

  • Monday 15: Silent sit in at Main Gate (12:30 p.m.)

Higher Education in the Middle East and the Next Generation of Arab Leaders - Google Tech Talks seminar

Abstract (quote)
Higher education is changing rapidly in the Middle East with the establishment of new U.S. campuses in the Gulf Emirates and the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. And at a time when Arab opinion of U.S. policies has never been lower, the demand for U.S.-style, English-language higher education in the Middle East has never been greater. These changes are crucial to the future economic, societal and political development in the region.

Play humanises Middle East conflict - 13 Dec 2008 (AlJazeera)

from AlJazeera:
"While politicians struggle to make peace, the human cost of the Middle East conflict is the subject of a play which is proving hugely popular in Israel. 'The Return to Haifa" tells the story of a Palestinian family whose son is adopted by a Jewish couple when they are forced to leave Haifa during the 1948 war."
Aljazeera's Adam Pines reports on the impact the play stirred amongst its viewers.

Post-Columbian population movements and the roots of world inequality | vox - Research-based policy analysis and commentary from leading economists

Post-Columbian population movements and the roots of world inequality | vox - Research-based policy analysis and commentary from leading economists, Louis Putternam and David Neil: "a five century migration matrix indicating the 1500 countries of residence of ancestors of each country’s current population. The power of regional origins is illustrated by the fact that 44% of the variance in 2000 per capita GDPs is accounted for by the share of the population’s ancestors that lived in Europe in 1500."

some snippets from the article:

what the matrix says that.... (all below quoted from the article)
"today’s countries are extremely diverse in terms of the importance of immigration. The fraction of today’s population that has ancestors who lived in their present country in 1500 are:
  • 3% for US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand;
  • 94% to 98% for Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia;
  • 94% for Europe on average;
  • 89% for North Africa and West and Central Asia;
  • 65% for Mexico and Central America;
  • 20% for South America;
  • 0%, for the Caribbean.

... the origin of a particular nation’s population today. For example:

  • About 4.4% of the current US population’s ancestors lived in France in 1500,
  • About 8.5% lived in Ireland,
  • About 1.1% in Senegal, and
  • About 0.9% in China.

... it also tells us that:

  • about 97.9% of the ancestors of today’s Indians lived in India in 1500,
  • about 77% of the ancestors of today’s Singaporeans lived in China,
  • about 45% of the ancestors of today’s Fijians lived in India.

Why it matters? Authors write:

Why should we care about the apparently powerful influence that population origins exert on country and sub-national incomes levels?

First, if this influence is indeed as significant as our findings suggest it to be, then efforts to sort out the roles that geographic, institutional, and other factors play in explaining income levels and growth rates may produce misleading results unless we properly control for it.

Second, the influence of population origins suggests that there is something that human families and communities transmit from generation to generation -- perhaps a form of economic culture, a set of attitudes or beliefs, or informally transmitted capabilities -- that is of at least similar importance to economic success as are more widely recognized factors like quantities of physical capital and even human capital in the narrower sense of formal schooling. If we understand which culturally transmitted factors are important and what contributes to their emergence and propagation, we might be able to design policy interventions that could help less successful groups and countries to close their developmental gaps."

Lebanon news - NOW Lebanon :: If not now, when -How many calories in a manouche?

Lebanon news - NOW Lebanon :: If not now, when -How many calories in a manouche?: "Contrary to the stereotypical images of Lebanon as a weight- and beauty -conscious nation, the first study on overweight and obesity in the country found that most adults here are actually too heavy. A report published in 2003 by professors at the American University of Beirut found that 53% of adults aged 20 years and older were overweight, while 17% were obese, which means they are more than 20% heavier than their ideal weight. These figures are only slightly lower than rates seen in the United States, widely acknowledged as the fattest country on earth. And the situation doesn’t look much better for Lebanese youth. According to a 2005 study, more than one in five children aged between six and 19 are also too heavy, almost certainly setting them up for an overweight adulthood."

BBC NEWS | Europe | Actor cuts throat on Vienna stage: "An actor narrowly escaped death after slashing his throat on stage with a real knife, instead of a blunt stage-prop blade.

Daniel Hoevels slumped to the floor with blood pouring from his neck during a performance at Vienna's Burgtheater.

He was rushed to hospital with a deep slice to his throat which fortunately missed his main artery.

Austrian police are investigating whether the incident was a mistake or a deliberate attack on the actor."

...

The audience is said to have applauded what they thought was a stunning special effect, and only realised something was wrong when the actor staggered off stage to receive treatment.

Study examines motives behind Santa myth

Study examines motives behind Santa myth: "Having kids believe there's a jolly man in a red suit who visits on Christmas Eve isn't detrimental, although some parents can feel they're outright lying to their children, according to a new analysis by Serge Larivée.
'When they learn the truth, children accept the rules of the game and even go along with their parents in having younger children believe in Santa,' says Larivée, a psycho-education professor at the Université de Montréal. 'It becomes a rite of passage in that they know they are no longer babies.'

Larivée, along with colleague Carole Sénéchal from the Univerity of Ottawa, examined a study from 1896 involving 1,500 children aged 7 to 13, which was repeated in 1979. More than 46 percent of children in 1896 and 44 percent in 1979 gradually found out on their own that Santa didn't exist."

Off the Shelf - Dubai, the Glittering Emirate, Revisited - NYTimes.com

Off the Shelf - Dubai, the Glittering Emirate, Revisited - NYTimes.com: "DUBAI is one of those magical places that seem too good to be true. Along with the far larger and richer Abu Dhabi, it is one of seven city-states in the loose United Arab Emirates federation, which gained independence in 1971 from the overextended British empire. Dubai’s freewheeling nightlife (in a nominally Muslim land) and its over-the-top architecture have elicited generally superficial treatment. Christopher M. Davidson, a scholar based in Britain who formerly taught in the U.A.E., corrects this with his new book, “Dubai” (Columbia University, $32.50)." Full article here

Expectations and Reports of Homework for Public School Students in the First, Third, and Fifth Grades

Expectations and Reports of Homework for Public School Students in the First, Third, and Fifth Grades: "This brief uses data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) to examine (1) the amount of time that students’ public school teachers expected them to spend on reading/language arts and mathematics homework in first, third, and fifth grades; and (2) reports from parents of public school children of how often their children did homework at home in the first, third, and fifth grades. Teachers' expectations are reported by the percentage of minority students in the student's school and parents' reports are reported by the child's race/ethnicity. The findings indicate that the amount of reading and mathematics homework that students' teachers expected them to complete on a typical evening generally increased from first grade to fifth grade. In both subjects and in all grades, differences were found by the minority enrollment of the school. Children in schools with higher percentages of minority students had teachers who expected more homework on a typical evening, whereas generally children in lower minority schools had teachers who expected less homework. In addition, in all three grades, larger percentages of Black, Asian, and Hispanic children than White children had parents who reported that their child did homework five or more times a week."

Sociologists say fear of being unable to afford gifts may drive competitive shopping

Sociologists say fear of being unable to afford gifts may drive competitive shopping: "While greed may seem an obvious motive for crowds that stampede retailers in search of bargains at this time of year, experts say fear also plays a significant role.
A fear of being unable to afford gifts - given today's economic woes - may drive many consumers to shop competitively for bargains at dawn, say local psychologists and sociologists.

Many people abandon their normal behavior when caught up in the urge to snag discounted plasma HDTVs like those on sale Friday at Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, N.Y."
