Illiteracy in the Middle East

As part of UNESCO initiative for fighting illiteracy in the world titled "Education for All", a conference is being held right in Doha. An Aljazeera.net article has some interesting findings that it quotes 2006 UNESCO world literacy report: "there are between 65 and 70 million adults in the Arab world over the age of 15 who can't read or write. More than half of those are women and vast majority live in rural areas." Also some stats on adult literacy rates in the Middle East are referenced from UNESCO in the article:

600,000 Saudi Women Smoke

A survey released by the Saudi Health Ministry reveals that 6 million people in Saudi Arabia, 600,000 of them women, smoke 40,000 tons of cigarettes every year - worth more than $1.3 billion dollars yearly. Majority of the young Saudi start smoking before age of 20. Survey also estimates that 23,000 deaths occur each year due to sPublishmoking-related diseases.
